WHAT EXACTLY IS A PARAPROFESSIONAL?
The term "paraprofessional" is indicative of the role of paraprofessionals. "Para" means "alongside of" and we do work alongside the teacher in the delivery of instructional and other direct services. Clear distinctions between the roles of teachers and paraprofessionals must be made in order for a team to work together as an effective team. It is the teacher who has the ultimate responsibility for the education of the students that takes place in the classroom learning environment.
Here are some of the things we do!
Instructional Duties: We help students with basic skills, assignments, projects, and self skills. We also serve as tutors for students who need individual help.
Resource Duties: We help keep the classroom clean and organized. We help manage learning centers, bulletin boards, prepare art work activities, and prepare instructional materials.
Classroom Organization Duties: We prepare materials for activities, assist students with health needs, (personal needs, sickness and accidents).
Behavior Management Duties: We reinforce classroom and school rules. We also manage conflicts between students, and serve as monitors in the lunchroom.
Clerical Duties: We take attendance, type newsletters and notes. We operate the copier, fax, sort and file work. We help with paperwork, inventory, and student records.
